Museum/Exhibition

Discover the fascinating world of the Essen Cathedral Treasure,
a hidden gem that delves deep into history while presenting captivating, world-class works of art. Located in the centre of the Ruhr region, the Essen Cathedral Treasure offers a unique symbiosis of Gothic, Romanesque and modern influences.

The Golden Madonna, the oldest fully plastic sculpture of the Virgin Mary, and the seven-branched candelabrum are just some of the impressive highlights that transport visitors back to the heyday of Essen's convent and provide deep insights into the rich cult history of the 10th and 11th centuries. The cathedral itself, an architectural masterpiece from the 13th century, is a tribute to the artistic craftsmanship that runs through its magnificent Romanesque components.

For all those who are not afraid of adventure, the Essen Cathedral Treasure offers a gateway to over 1000 years of living history. The exhibits tell stories of skilfully crafted silver jewellery, long-forgotten rituals and the spiritual power of the abbesses. A visit promises not only cultural enrichment, but also an emotional connection to a past that is often lost in modern everyday life.

Free from the hectic pace of everyday life, the cathedral treasure invites you on an intensive, almost meditative journey into the beginnings of arts and crafts in the Holy Roman Empire. For culture lovers and explorers, every sculpture you see, every splendid cross, is a small adventure of wonder and realisation. Ideal for an extended visit, perhaps even as an inspiring break from casual tourist attractions in NRW.
