With the large Ruhr reservoir in the south of the city, Essen has a top recreational area to offer.
The Baldeneysee, dammed in 1931 as a water reservoir and to purify the Ruhr water, is now a recreational area of supraregional standing. Rowing clubs, sailing and surfing schools around the 2.7-square-kilometre lake invite visitors to spend active leisure time. Once a year, the elite of German sailors meet here for the Essen Week, the largest German inland lake regatta.
Taking the 14.7 km lap around the lake on inline skates, on foot or by bicycle is one of the greatest leisure pleasures for the sporty among the lake visitors. Those who like it more comfortable can get to know the wooded lake and Ruhr shores from the ships of the "White Fleet".
An eye-catcher in the heights: the Villa Hügel, the residence of the industrialist family Krupp until the 1940s and today the venue for top-class art-historical exhibitions.
White Fleet Baldeney
The White Fleet Baldeney sets sail from April to October - for a round trip on Essen's local waters or for a long-distance cruise on the Ruhr to the neighbouring city of Mülheim - shore leave in Essen-Kettwig included on request. From June to September, the regular cruises also take place on the MS innogy, a methanol-powered, CO2-neutral electric ship.
